Marika Meyer’s Family Home: A Cozy, Layered Reflection of Her Life’s Story

Interior and textile designer Marika Meyer faced an unexpected challenge when designing her own family home—balancing her ever-evolving style with the practical needs of a busy household. As someone who effortlessly adapts to her clients’ tastes, defining her own aesthetic proved daunting. Meyer sought to create a space that reflected her personal journey while remaining functional for her growing family.

Her approach blended performance fabrics for durability with antiques and layered patterns that bring her signature style to life. She prioritized comfort over perfection, ensuring her home felt inviting rather than overly designed. In the kitchen, a patterned antique rug conceals wear, while a vintage secretary in the dining room serves as both a workspace and a bar during gatherings.

The family room showcases Meyer’s boldest choices, with vibrant colors and textiles inspired by Harbour Island. A striking Slim Aarons photograph compensates for the lack of windows, drawing the eye upward and infusing the space with light. Throughout the home, personal touches—like her beloved elephant collection and pieces from her textile line—tell a story of her evolving identity.

For Meyer, designing her own home was a rare opportunity for unfiltered self-expression. While she may struggle to define the final result in words, her guiding principle remained clear: this was the moment to have fun and fully embrace her identity as a designer.
